Kathmandu City Planning Commission

August 25, 2019

Kathmandu, city planning commission office invited me to share my vision of a green city. I shared my plans, experiences, and the bureaucratic hassles that I faced constantly while trying to implement constructive ideas.

I have seen the plans and ideas of city planning agencies and I have found them problematic. It can negatively affect the experience of public life yet they influence and decides how people should fit into his limited vision. The Architects rely too much on 3d renderings without careful site studies and its context. They impose object-oriented designs into the landscape with a blind spot for biodiversity.

The community participation is zero. For a project like this to succeed it requires the collection of honest effort from everyone involved. Therefore, I am holding meetings with the decision-makers, and dozens of interactions with local communities, listening to them and identifying shared values to create a sense of ownership.

In Nepal, the people’s hope has been dimmed by the corrupt system. It takes time and a united effort for a transformative policy to emerge. I am challenged and I challenge all of us to change our approach and tackle this age-old inertia stored in our society.
